The Metropolitan Emergency Consortium Communications (MECC) had its beginnings in the Mifflin Township Division of Fire as a solution to provide fire and emergency medical services dispatching.
Serving unincorporated Mifflin Township and the City of Gahanna, the Division of Fire decided in 2001 to leave the Franklin County Sheriff's Communications Center and begin its own fire and emergency medical services dispatching operation.
Located in the Whitehall Fire Station, the Mifflin Township dispatch center was staffed with firefighters until career dispatchers were hired.
Building on a FEMA grant of $760,000.00, the Mifflin Township Division of Fire launched the next phase in service to our community. The MECC 911 Center was started with the cooperation of three fire departments - Mifflin Township, Plain Township Fire (New Albany), and Jefferson Township (Blacklick).
The Mifflin Township Hall was selected as the first site for the Consortium 911-Center. Within six months of construction, the MECC began operations.
Within a couple of years, fire departments from Truro Township (Reynoldsburg), the City of Whitehall, and Violet Township (Pickerington) joined the consortium.
The goal is superior technology with costs shared across several departments, seasoned dispatchers with a firm understanding of the Firefighting and EMS business, and a genuine concern on the part of all to best serve our citizens and neighbors. With this cooperation, our departments can meet and exceed federal standards for serving our community where costs would be prohibitive individually.
In 2005, MECC began a relationship with the State of Ohio Fire Marshal's office, receiving requests from all over the state of Ohio for after-hours fire investigators for various incidents.
Additionally, MECC serves as one of four regional dispatch centers for a cooperative effort by the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association called the Ohio Emergency Response Plan (OERP). This plan provides large-scale statewide emergency responses of personnel and apparatus for short and long-term man-made or natural disasters.
