The Mifflin Township Fire Department received a report at 11:47 a.m. about a breach in a gas line near the 500 block of North Hamilton Road in Gahanna, north of Clark State Rd. and south of East Johnstown Road (Route 62).
The leak was caused when construction crews in the area accidentally struck a gas line at the intersection of Thornburn Place and Hamilton Road while working. There were no injuries and no fire due to the gas line break; however, Mifflin Township Fire will be on the scene for the next 5 – 6 hours while Columbia Gas works to repair the line.
North and southbound Hamilton Road, between Clark State Rd. and Johnstown Road (Route 62), in Gahanna is closed to all traffic. Motorists traveling in the area are being asked to take an alternate route until the leak is repaired.
“Residents may notice the smell of gas being emitted into the air, but it is within safe levels for residents to remain in the area,” said Acting Chief Fred Kauser. “If residents have any safety concerns, they should call 9-1-1.”
Residents experiencing an interruption in their gas service should call Columbia Gas at 1-800-344-4077.
